This is a set of 33rd Mounted Rifles reinforcement badges. These are the very rare ''high tail '' peagasus variety.Of the draft photo's i have seen ,only about 5 troopers wear this variety(out of approxiamately 150 in the draft).

Two of New Zealands largest private badge collections have only 4 and five respectively ,out of a possible 17 draft cap badges.

The high tail badges commence from the 31st reinforcement draft to the 47th,where as the more common low tail peagasus cap badges are from the 25th to the 47th.These two varieties are made by different manufacturers.

I own the 31st and the 33rd ,and i can tell you they are hard to find.

A set of peagasus ''low tail'' reinforcement badges of the 45th draft for comparison.

While training at the Featherston military camp, the Mounted Rifles were supervised by the Camp Military police. This is a very rare set of Feathston CMP badges.

The 23rd and 24th Mounted rifles(258 troopers in total) sailed on thr transport ''Moeraki'' on the 31/5/1917 from New Zealand, arriving in the Suez,Egypt,on the 19/10/1917.

Only a small percentage of these drafts wore these badges ,as they were private purchase,so therefore cost the individual money. They are very rare ,the market price now for a cap badge ranges between $450-$525,collars $225 each.

i hope Steve recieved my last scan.I hope to have something more exciting in near future.A full draft .

Hello NZEF1940, and welcome on my behalf. You have a nice sweetheart badge of the 35th MR..To give you an indication of its rarity, there were 276 troopers in the 35th and 36th M.R reinforcements draft. So the 35th was approxiamately 138,possibly a small amount of these troopers gave a sweetheart to there wifes/mothers /girlfriends.From a couple of draft photo's i have seen only about 35-40% of troopers actually wear the brass peagasus cap badges.Your bi-metal rearing horse badge is reasonably rare also.I have seen your NZMR in fern leaf wreath before, these are the comonest of designs of the NZMR sweethearts ,different variations,(as pictured,my NZMR sweethearts)still i very nice badge.Fantastic, hope to get something similar to add to my sweetheart collection one day.

Cheers Iain

Sorry Puk but the officer is only a captain and the medal ribbon looks like a Military Cross, not a QSA. That ties in nicely with the 41st NZMR as the captain was Edward LEVIEN (11/74) who was awarded the Miltary Cross for service in the Wellington MR from 1st March 1917 through to 15th September 1917. He also got a Mentioned in Despatches. There are already photos of him in the Auckland Weekly News and the Otago Witness. The only other men who are 'unique' in rank are 58447 QMS Harold HESLOP, 58419 Sergt-Major Archibald COOK, 74047 Farr-Corpl Samuel PATTERSON, 74557 Sig-Corpl James DAVIS-GOFF. All from up North, Do you think you could identify them from the photo?
Pleased the photo is of some interest, considering its been blown up from postcard size i think you've done a good job getting the pictures on the forum.

Heres an interesting photo of a Canterbury Mounted Rifle trooper wearing two reinforcement badges. This is the first time i've seen more than one badge worn in a portrait.

7/2559 Private Frederick John Kelly ,from Kennigton Southland.

Wearing a very rare variation of the rampant horse in a crowned fern wreath as well as a fern wreath C11 reinforcement badge.

Kelly was killed in aqction on the Somme ,23rd September 1916 while serving in the Auckland Infantry regiment
