Thanks also Iain for your list of Reinforcement Embarkation Dates.

Looking at the list I see we can update it, as recently you may well be aware that we had a "Troopers Story" file posted with a pay book that showed that Will Carter set sail to Port Said on the "Tofua" in 1915 with one of the reinforcements - you may read his story and see his pay book here:
http://www.nzmr.org/carter.htm

I have posted your list on our "Lists" page at:
http://www.nzmr.org/lists/reinforce.html

and invite members to fill in blank spaces - I would be interested in adding HMNZT numbers - OR are those the numbers of the ships in brackets?
Second thoughts the numbers must represent the number of troops in each detail!

Greg
There were several reinforcement drafts that were mounted rifles only, especially after the mounteds were left in Egypt from 1916 onwards. I will send you the details once my sea freight arrives from the US, which has all my reference books in it.

Iain, Now that you have started me on the NZMR Embarkation list I have found this reference page at:
http://www.katikati.co.nz/kk_text/anzac_dunton_a.html

What intests me here is the embarkation of this particular soldier (and not from the NZMR but 6th Reinforcement, NZEF)

Embarked 14th August 1915 from New Zealand
aboard either HMNZT 27 (ss Willochra)
or HMNZT 28 (ss Tofua)
and disembarked 19th September 1915 at Port Suez, Egypt.
(NB unable to ascertain which companies were transported in which troopship).

This appears to be the same sailing of the Tofua that our man Seargeant Will Carter departed NZ on?

Also of interest is the reference source used:
Studholme, J. Some Records of the N.Z. Expeditionary Force
Does anybody have a copy or ready acess to this volume?

I must compliment Steve Bulter for his fine pictures of my NZMR reinforcements as well as battling on in adversity. The old troopers would have been proud of you. There are a few variations that i'm missing including 14th reinforcements NZ XIV in base scroll,J company 14th reinforcements, and 19th reinforcements ,and while availability and finances permitting i hope to add to collection,in the mean time if other members have them and are willing to send Steve digital pictures that would be just great.

The 17th Reinforcements NZVC(veterinary corps) ,while not actually a NZMR reinforcement badge, but closely aligned with the NZMR

Hello Steve, I can fill in one space on you reinforcements list. The following details come directly from my grandfathers service record.
Regiment 12th MTD Rifles, 12 Reinforcements, Transport #52, departed NZ 6-5-1916, arrived Egypt 22-6-1916,Troopship Mokoia.
I hope this helps

Indeed it will Byrd - thanks for your input.
Yes it will be nice to get that list up to date.
For others reading this, Byrd is referring to my partial "Reinforcements list" at:
http://www.nzmr.org/lists/reinforce.html
I have to admit that it is very hotch-potch at the moment - but by posting it I have had two replies and I see by the hit counter that over two hundred people have viewed the page - at least that makes everyone aware that we still have plenty of work to do.
(We most certsainly have) - and I reiterate here, that if anyone is interested in adding a story of a family member, an event or other insights into the NZMR please forward your ideas to me through "Contact webmaster" on the first drop down menu on the opening page (or left hand side banner containing the ANZAC memorial).

An additional comment: "It never rains ..." - I am posting this through another remote computer as my workstation gave up the ghodst the other morning and it is in for repairs - hopefully I will be posting more material in the near future!

I would also like to bring to attention of members the article in the New Zealand Herald this morning of an original painting of "Simpson and his Donkey" being auctioned for the first time by the family who had the painting given to them in 1922 by the artist - Moore-Jones.
read the article here:

Hello there Byrd,I am not aware of a specific Mounted rifles 12th reinforcement badge.I would think the badge you are after would be the same as the infantry reinforcement badge. It would be either A over XII in a fern wreath and crown,B over XII,C over XII,or D over XII or A over12,B over 12,C over 12,D over 12,A being Auckland Squadron,B being Wellington squadron,C Canterbury,D Otago.Their is a wide variety of frame types.Badges made specifically for Mounted rifles started at 14th reinforcements.
The I.C.C corp was a British unit, but the fourth Battalion,Imperial Camel Brigade was a N.Z unit with 12 officers and 338 other ranks. There was a badge for this unit was on trademe for $1400,which is a bit beyond my finances at the moment. The British badge is similar without the N.Z on it.If you want some images press pukman on the members file and e-mail me.Cheers Iain

Sorry i must make a correction,Should have done more homework. The general pattern as described above, was only used up untill the 11th reinforcements. From the 12th reinforcements onwards troops were classified undesignated. All troops sailed in reinforcement drafts to Egypt before that time ,while from the 12th reinforcements onward the Infantry sailed to England, the mounteds to Egypt. The only specific Mounted reinforcements badges belonged to the 14,17,19,23,24,and 25-47 drafts. So there is not a specific badge for the 12th , although the wreathed fern badges with the rampant horse badge's, may have been worn.Cheers Iain

I've heard about wasted lives in "Pool Halls" and the new generation sitting goggle eyed at TV screens with play stations in hand - BUT here's something that could really drive the wife mad -
An absolutely fabulous collection of NZ military badges - this is a credit to you PUKMAN - thanks for sending up the photo.

People be warned this image is 800k to download onto your web page - so those with dial-up may need to wait a minute or so to bring it down - on broadband only a few seconds.

I'll have to start by thanking members of the NZMR association for thier support.

I started this project when i was a young fella,as a tribute to my Grandfather ,a rifleman in the NEW ZEALAND Rifle Brigade, who was severely wounded in the Battle of Passchendaele in Belgium on the 12/10/1917.and also to his brothers ,one who was badly gassed in Bapaume, France, and the youngest who lost his life on Trescault Spur, also France in September 1918.

Included in this collection (in order) are ,the 17 infantry regiments, plus the NZRB,the 12 Mounted regiments. The 17th to the 33rd infantry reinforcement drafts.A selection of mounted rifle reinforcement badges plus the camel corp cap badge. The military police Specialist and NZ Rifle brigade reinforcement badges(the Blackened set belonging to grandfather).Various incarnations of the Moari Battalion, tunnelers company,4th reserve brigade, and various corps badges.

The collection itself is in no ways a comprehnsive collection of W.W.1 New Zealand badges, but some that i find interesting, and also reading of the history of these units.

Some are not of course New Zealand Mounted Rifles badges you would say ,they can be in some way associated with brigade, having fought along side them in Gallipoli ,as the Infantry regiments did,or as part of them in Egypt ,Sinai,Palestine as did the various corps did.Even argueably the worst troops New Zealand ever produced The Cook Island Company, operated the barges in Palestine. Also the CMP or camp military police(Featherston) who helped to keep the Troopers under control.

I also have a tiny collection of "sweetheart badges'',badges that were jeweller made given to wifes and gilfriends by soldiers,if any one's intersted i'll post a picture, thiers about three NZMR ones.

Cheers, Pukman.

Hi Pukman

A very nice collection you have.

Just out of interest why have you left out "Medical Corps, Army Service Corps, Veterinary Corps, Dental Corps Ordnance Corps and Standard NZE badge?
I would have thought they were very important ?

Pukman, another question for you. At present there is a reinforcement badge on Trademe (auction 165157983), it is like the one you posted a picture of but with the horse facing the other way. Does this mean anything? Thank you, byrd.
