Steve~
I actually spent a number of hours downloading 18 megs of info to load into a data base to start my own data base to work off line - but as you can see here there is a great site all ready at:
http://pages.quicksilver.net.nz/l.rwill ... index.html

(this site is alao recognised on our "Links Page" ) at:
http://www.nzmr.org/links.htm

All your men are here - and a lot with photographs as well- and I see this site is more comprehensive than what I have put together - here is one of your men with all details:

Mates,

I did find an interesting one in my DB, that is:

WATERHOUSE Percy Marsden 11/618 Pte Hawera NZ and Launceston Tas

It appears young Percy was an aussie working in NZ as an Engineer and joined the NZ Army on the 20-8-14.

He embarked to Egypt and once there saw the error of his ways and crossed over to the 2nd LHR as (542) and served on Gallipoli.

After Gallipoli he joined the 3rd LHR as Sgt and was awarded the MID and RTA.

My question is this;

His AIF service record in on the ANA site, in which is a copy of his NZ enlistment records are there, but I can't find what unit he embarked with?

Why don't the NZ Enlistment records show a unit or did I just missed?

Check them out

Cheers

11/ = Wellington Mounted Rifles

Postby Bill Woerlee » Sun Dec 31, 2006 12:09 pm

Steve

G'day mate

The 11/ is the marker for the Wellington Mounted Rifles, so 11/618 is his regiment and regimental number.

Here's the list of formation numbers on the early NZEF. After a certain number, the rest of the recruits became General Service Recruits and were allocated according to need rather than recruited to a specific formation. Oz did this much later in the war.

1/ = Samoan Advance
2/ = Artillery
3/ = New Zealand Medical Corps
4/ = New Zealand Engineers
5/ = Army Service Corps
6/ = Canterbury Infantry
7/ = Canterbury Mounted Rifles
8/ = Otago Infantry
9/ = Otago Mounted Rifles
10/ = Wellington Infantry
11/ = Wellington Mounted Rifles
12/ = Auckland Infantry
13/ = Auckland Mounted Rifles
14/ = Army Service Corps Divisional Train
15/ = DHQ
16/ = Maori Infantry
17/ = Veterinary Corps
18/ = Chaplains Department
19/ = Samoan Relief Infantry
20/ = Samoan Relief Mounted Rifles
21/ = Pay Department
22/ = New Zealand Army Nursing Service
23/ = 1st Battalion, New Zealand Rifle Brigade
24/ = 2nd Battalion, New Zealand Rifle Brigade
25/ = 3rd Battalion, New Zealand Rifle Brigade
26/ = 4th Battalion, New Zealand Rifle Brigade

Cheers

Re: Australians who served in the NZEF

Postby Steve_Butler » Wed Sep 19, 2007 3:32 pm

Today arrived a letter, where new forum member - Graeme Booth - (who naturally enough calls himself a New Zealander) sent in the picture below of his father and uncle - Two Australian brothers who served with the AMR - welcome Graeme to the forum and indeed the Mounted Rifles family.

Graeme is in the process of supplying more information - I know Bill, Steve and others in Australian will be keen to update their log on Aussie's serving with the Kiwi mounteds in WWI.
Image

Graeme's letter to me reads:
Hello Steve

It was a delight to talk with you yesterday and thank you so much for
the work you are doing to preserve the history of the Mounted Rifles.

My father, Norman Douglas Booth, commenced his duty with the Mounted
Rifles as a trooper on 23/09/1916 and was discharged as a sapper on
07/06/1919, according to his discharge certificate. I can't find his
regimental number at present but I do have it.

I'm a bit pressed for time today so I'll attach just one picture of my
father and his brother Andrew in Sydney not long after meeting up
there. Andrew was the older brother who was returning home after being
wounded at Gallipoli. My Dad was meant to be back in New Zealand
running the family farm - hence the : " What in the bloody hell do you
think you are doing here ? " comment.

My Dad is wearing the peaked cap.

I have a number of other pictures which I will send you.

Graeme Booth
