NZMR AUTHENTIC TACK AND PERSONAL EQUIPMENT REPRODUCTIONS

This is just to inform you that there is a New Zealand alternative to purchasing Military leather items from overseas. My aim is to remake authentic, quality tack and personal kit as used by the NZMR using 1st grade New Zealand leather. All gear is hand sewn using the traditional methods as indicated by Military Articifers Manuals. Personal items can be custom fitted as in the case of the New Zealand Type One Bandoliers and belts, which I belive are not available any where else. I now have available felt numnahs for new 1902 UP saddles and which can also be used on original '02 saddles whose felts have succumbed to the ravages of the moth, in some cases the pockets if in good condition can be reused.
I live in Whangarei and have worked as a volunteer for many years with local Museums restoring leather items - so have a reasonable grasp of dealing with disintegrating and fossilised bovine skin. Can also custom make straps etc which may be missing or broken on items in your collections.
Although I have no family connections to the NZMR I belive in the Association and what it is going to achieve. My intrest in horses, leather work and saddlery will hopefully be of value to the Association.

1902 Universal Pattern Saddle. Built on second hand (genuine military) trees. (All parts available separately also).

Type 2 Pattern bridle complete or head collar/headpiece only.

Numnahs (pair) Genuine wool felt - with pockets and fittings.

Type One New Zealand Bandolier. With steady strap and two connecting straps.

Type One New Zealand Bandolier Belts for use with Bandolier. (Custom made to your waist measurement and colour requirement).

Type One Ammunition Pouch (single).

Gerneral purpose straps and Wallet 'Y' straps also available to secure your gear to your saddle.

Any or all of these items can be made to match your existing kit.
Also available for you to repair your own gear are copper rivets and burrs (plain or tinned as originals) as well as brass military roller buckles in various sizes, dees and squares, brass bandolier and bridle studs.

I finished this pouch today for the up coming Museum Display. It has been suitably "aged" to fit in with the rest of the kit on the horse. Will now be able to supply these along with the other items in the Ethos range.

Used for driving in the ground and attatching the horse lines to, via another looped rope, these pegs were carried by Mounted Riflemen. These pegs have been made from Ash wood to correct specifications of an original peg. Harness for carrying the pegs on the saddle also available.

Hi Donna

I am a very interested great-granddaughter of a North Auckland Mounted Rifles Trooper (Thomas Sterling) in getting a saddle & tack recreation. I am coming to NZ in August next year for my grandmother’s 80th birthday (his daughter) – thus if it is possible to purchase & have created a saddle and tack, it would be a fine opportunity to bring it home then.

I am only finding out so much about him now – the website for the Mounted Rifles is fantastic – and hence where I was able to get your contact details.
