A new book is hitting the stores about now.
Its title is Safe Haven. Author Neil Frances Publisher:Wairarapa Archives;ISBN 978-0-9582617-9-1
A book about the Featherston Military Camp and the Featherston POW Camp in the Second World War
It is in A4 landscape format, liberally illustrated with photos and drawings from almost all periods of the camps existence
Booksellers cost is unknown.
It is published under the auspices of the Wairarapa Archives and should be available through them.
Once I have read it will post more about it. It certainly looks very intresting.

The book is a good effort at recording the site of the camp and its surrounds. There are maps, drawings, and plenty of photographs. It is not an easy read at bedtime as the format is difficult to hang onto. But that is not a reason; to not buy or read it.
The site has featured in several recent events particularly the 2nd WW and Japanese Prisoners of War.
Just imagine you have finished your training there, your graduation is a route march over the Rimataka Range back to Trentham Military Camp. A good intro if you were off to Europe.
Rating 4 out of 5
