id of 303 cartridges

Postby Neil Allan » Sun Sep 03, 2006 10:01 am

I have two .303 cartridges that I cannot ID and wonder if anyone can assist. The first is a MkVII with a headstamp that consists of a dot and a straight line at the 12 and 6 oclock. At the 12 the dot is to the left of the line and is reversed at the 6. It has a 3 stab crimps and the projectile is Cn.

the second is a portugese AE round dated 1934, the base is painted red as is the neckseal. The paint is crudely applied. Any idea what the paint signifies?

Hi the Portuguese cart. Red paint usually referred to an armourpiercing round. But in some countries red may also refer to a tracer round
